Stuck on what to sing? Our free Audition Song Finder matches you with musical theatre audition songs based on the show and role you want, or your own voice, playable age, and style. Every pick comes with a reason it fits, so you can walk into the room with a song that actually works for you.
How to Use the Song Finder
- Choose your path. Pick “Audition songs for a specific show” if you’re auditioning for one musical, or “Audition songs customized for me” for general auditions, multi-show seasons, or building your audition book.
- Tell us what you’re auditioning for. For a specific show, start typing the title and choose up to three roles you’d love to play.
- Tell us about you. Add your voice type (choose “Not sure” if you don’t know yet), your playable age, and the kind of material you want: comedic, dramatic, Golden Age, contemporary, pop/rock, legit, belt, or a character song. These questions are optional if you’ve chosen a specific show — in this case we’ll lean on the show and character attributes to find your best picks.
- Read the “why.” Your results are sorted into Top match, Excellent fit, and Possible fit. Tap “Why this song?” to see exactly why each one suits the role and you.
- Narrow it down and prep your cut. Listen to your top few, choose the one you sound and feel best singing, then mark a cut that fits the length on the audition notice (or about a minute long, if they don’t specify, or if you’re just preparing your audition book).
How to Choose the Right Audition Song
The Song Finder gives you a great list of options, and the final choice is yours. Here’s what we look for from the director’s side of the table:
- Follow the audition notice first. If it asks for a certain length, style, or a song from the show, make sure to follow the requirements.
- Pick a song that’s like the role, not from it. A song with a similar style and a character with a similar want will show the team you’re right for the part. (Unless they specifically ask for the show’s material.)
- Choose comfort over flash. A song that sits well in your voice beats a riskier song you have to fight through. Familiar songs are fine, too. If you sound amazing on it, sing it!
- Act the song. Know who you’re singing to and what you want from them.
- Get the cut right. Mark a clear start and end, and watch for key changes.

Audition Song FAQs
What is a good audition song for a musical?
A good audition song suits your voice, fits the style of the show, and gives you a character to play. It should feel comfortable on a nervous day, fit any requirements from the audition notice, and show the team you could play the role you want.
What’s the difference between a 16-bar and a 32-bar cut?
A “bar” (or measure) is a unit of music, so a 16-bar cut is a short section of a song and a 32-bar cut is about twice as long. Choose a section that tells a mini-story and shows off your voice, and mark your start and end clearly on your sheet music. Many community theatre auditions ask for about 60–90 seconds.
Should I sing a song from the show I’m auditioning for?
Usually not, unless the audition notice asks for it. Most casting teams would rather hear a similar song from a different show, and you may be asked to learn the show’s music at callbacks. If they do request material from the show, give them exactly that.
What are good audition songs for beginners?
The best beginner songs are ones you know well, that sit comfortably in your range, and that you can act without overthinking. A familiar song is fine. Choose “Not sure” for voice type in the Song Finder and set your playable age, and we’ll suggest songs that fit.
What if I don’t know my voice type?
That’s completely okay! Choose “Not sure” in the Song Finder and you’ll still get recommendations. A voice teacher or music director can help you find your type, and you can come back to refine your results anytime.
Is the Audition Song Finder free?
Yes. Use it as often as you like for any audition, from your very first community theatre show to your ninety-first!
